Pirates in West Cork
Bantry Bay and neighboring Inlets in West Cork were once a favorite haunt of the marauding bands of pirates as they pillaged the eastern coast of America. The popular local historian,Michael Carroll has documented several Pirate connections to the area, especiall Owen O’Sullivan Bere who laundered the ill gotton gains for the Pirates of the Carribbean. “According to Legend, ‘Tis said that many able-bodied men, drinking in carefree abandon in what is now our Captain’s Room, were carried, drugged and unconscious, through the tunnel to sailing ships anchored in the harbour and were shanghaied by short-handed ships’ masters to complete their crews.” Turning Rogue rose in popularity because of these practices of the British Navy.
Though Pirates have a reputation for being blood thirsty and cut-throat, they are also the symbol of rising above tyranny and living above oppressive laws. These ideals are still treasured today by many and celebrated in the numerous Pirate Festivals that are held worldwide. Tales of Adventure on the High Seas will be told in local hostillaries.
